Mezzotint Mania Pt. 2!
This is a beginning course in the intaglio art of mezzotint. Mezzotint is a form of intaglio printmaking that does not require the use of acids or etchants- we will be using rockers to roughen the surface of a copper plate, making a dense, textured surface that holds ink. We will then be using tools such as burnishers and scrapers to scrape away at the rough surface to bring out the whites and lighter tonal values. The result is a print that has a beautiful wide array of tonal values ranging from deep blacks to bright whites. Upon completion of this course, each participant should have a general understanding of the history of mezzotint printmaking, how to rock their own plates, and how to scrape, burnish, proof, and edition their plates. This is an intermediate-advanced course for those who already have a basic understanding of intaglio printmaking (It’s recommended you take the “Beginner Etching” workshop first!)
This class will run on Tuesday evenings from 5:30-8:30 on 7/15, 7/22, 7/29, and 8/5. The course fee is $200 which will cover the cost of the plates, rockers, inks, tools, paper, newsprint, and other consumables! You don’t need to bring anything for this class besides a sketchbook and some ideas. Here is a tentative schedule of the course:
7/15: Go over history of mezzotint, plate rocking demo, give everyone plates to start rocking- demo on transferring images, scraping, and burnishing
7/22: Printing demo- continue rocking plates
7/29 and 8/5: Work days- printing plates, scraping and burnishing, and finalizing designs
By the end, participants will leave with an edition of prints and a plate to take home! They will also be able to use the studio during open studio hours at no additional cost.
